Jefferson Parish District Court Case Search

Jefferson Parish does not have a District Court. Instead, the functions typically handled by such a court are assumed by the 24th Judicial District Court. The District Court records, maintained by the court clerk, are a series of digital documents that provide a detailed account of every legal dispute the Court has resolved.

When cases are decided, records may initially consist of paper documents. However, court rules mandate that all records be preserved electronically. Accordingly, paper records are reviewed for correctness and converted into multiple digital formats and Blu-Ray media. Using a microphotographic process, the clerk of Courts produces a replica of the original. These replicas are then transferred along with other records to the Clerk of Court's IT department and the Louisiana State Archives in Baton Rouge for preservation.

A typical District Court record consists of the following information:

  • Case identifiers such as names of the parties involved, case number, citation, attorney name, and the presiding judge;
  • Complaints, petitions, or charges;
  • Responses or motions from both parties;
  • Affidavits, declarations, or witness statements;
  • Court orders, judgments, and verdicts;
  • Sentencing details (for criminal cases).

While certain records or details may be withheld from public view pursuant to a court order, most records are available for public review and copying. Residents often seek the District Court's records for proof of claim to a piece of real property, divorce, or acquittals of criminal charges.

However, certain juvenile cases fall outside the scope of its authority.

The court system has 16 elected divisions, including a Criminal Commissioner’s Court, a Domestic Commissioner’s Court, and four hearing officers.

A court docket is an electronic logbook of events during an unresolved legal dispute being handled by the court. It updates in real-time to reflect procedural developments as they occur in a court case, from the filing to when judgment is given. It covers key details like the filing of documents and certificates, the issuance of writs and their execution, and the dates these events occurred.

The 24th Judicial District Court dockets are accessible online via the Jefferson Parish Clerk of Court website. To conduct a search for the court docket:

  • Visit the website
  • Select "Search Dockets".
  • Specify the relevant division and date range.

Generally, most court records, except juvenile records, are accessible online via JeffNet, the clerk of court remote subscription service. In addition, these records can also be accessed through third-party sites like Louisianacourtrecords.us, which are known for their straightforward and easy-to-use interface. However, while the Court clerk guarantees that every electronic image obtained through JeffNet is a replica of the original, these third-party sites cannot make such a guarantee because they are not the creators of these records. Users are, therefore, encouraged to scrutinize the records received by comparing them with official resources to ensure accuracy.

Supreme Court vs. District Court

The Jefferson Parish 24th Judicial District Court functions as a trial court where disputes are primarily heard and resolved. It has original jurisdiction over most civil and criminal cases and exercises appellate jurisdiction over the city courts in Jefferson Parish. As a result, it handles evidence, witness testimony, and jury trials and gives initial rulings on cases.

In contrast, the Supreme Court is the highest in the State of Louisiana. Its decisions are binding on all lower courts in the state, including Jefferson Parish District Court. Like the District Court, the Supreme Court also has appellate jurisdiction. However, while the District Court reviews city court judgments, the Supreme Court primarily exercises its appellate jurisdiction over decisions from the Appellate Court.
